Gilberto Mora’s fan frenzy in San Luis highlights his meteoric rise after a missed Real Madrid move
Seventeen‑year‑old midfielder Gilberto Mora of Xolos de Tijuana received a rock‑star reception in San Luis Potosí, where dozens of fans cheered his name, took photos and collected autographs after his standout showing with the Mexico national team at the 2026 World Cup. He later scored the winning penalty in a 1‑0 victory over León, helping Xolos top the Apertura 2026 standings and drawing further media attention.
Mora also recalled that in 2020 he was close to a trial with Real Madrid after an invitation had been arranged, but the trip was cancelled when the COVID‑19 pandemic forced worldwide quarantines. The missed opportunity resurfaced in recent discussions, with several European clubs now interested, though he will not be able to negotiate a move until he turns 18 in October.
