Gill Aggregates fined £24k following fatal worker crush injury

Gill Aggregates has been fined £24,000 after a worker died from crush injuries at a depot in Dagenham. The incident occurred on 24 June 2020, when 34-year-old production operative Manjit Kumar was drawn into a bag-flattening conveyor system through an opening in the machinery guarding.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that while a fixed guard was installed, it contained an opening measuring approximately 600mm by 335mm, which allowed access to dangerous moving parts. The company pleaded guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court to breaching the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
