Gilles Rondy begins 180km Mediterranean swim from Calvi to Nice

Former European champion and Olympic swimmer Gilles Rondy has begun an endurance swim from Calvi to Nice. The 45-year-old athlete departed from Corsica on Sunday, August 23, aiming to cover approximately 180 kilometers across the Mediterranean Sea.

The attempt follows strict open water swimming regulations. Rondy is swimming without a wetsuit, using only a swimsuit and goggles. To maintain the integrity of the challenge, he is not permitted to have physical contact with boats or people; supplies must be provided via a pole or hand-to-hand without touching. While kayaks accompany him for safety and support, no assistance is allowed.

Beyond the athletic feat, Rondy intends to highlight the beauty and importance of protecting the Mediterranean. If weather conditions remain favorable, he is expected to arrive at the Opera beach in Nice on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 25.
