Gillian Anderson addresses viral confrontation with theatre fans
Actress Gillian Anderson has sparked debate regarding theatre etiquette after a video surfaced showing her confronting fans outside London’s Soho Place Theatre. In the footage, Anderson is heard telling a group of individuals that they cannot sit in the front row of her production of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ because it is ‘so distracting.’ She specifically noted that seeing the same people in the front row approximately 20 times was becoming a distraction during her performance.
Following social media backlash, Anderson issued a clarification on X, stating that the women in the video are people she has known for over 20 years and asking followers not to direct negativity toward them. She explained that in an intimate venue like Soho Place, performers can easily see the audience, which can impact the performance.
The incident follows similar recent calls for better audience behavior by other high-profile actors, including Cate Blanchett, who recently asked theatregoers to refrain from filming during her performances.
