Gilmar Mendes criticizes electoral defeat of Senator Esperidião Amin

Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Gilmar Mendes expressed public dissatisfaction regarding the electoral outcome in Santa Catarina, where Senator Esperidião Amin (PP-SC) failed to secure reelection to the Senate.

In a social media post, Mendes characterized the popular movement behind the election results by referencing a historical comparison to the 1974 defeat of Djalma Marinho. He noted that such movements can possess their own “logic and irrationality.” Mendes praised Amin’s long political career, which includes serving as Mayor of Florianópolis, Governor of Santa Catarina, and a multi-term Federal Deputy and Senator.

The election for the two Senate seats in Santa Catarina resulted in victories for Carol De Toni (PL) and Carlos Bolsonaro (PL). Amin finished in third place with 15.31% of the valid votes, totaling approximately 1,233,034 votes. Analysts suggest Mendes’ comments may intensify existing political tensions between the Supreme Court and conservative sectors of society.
