Gimcheon City Council opposes conversion of professional football club

The Gimcheon City Council has officially announced its opposition to the proposal to convert the Gimcheon Sangmu Professional Football Club into a citizen-owned club. The council cited several critical concerns, including the lack of social consensus and the significant financial burden on the municipality.

According to the council, Gimcheon City's financial independence rate is only 11.2%. Converting to a citizen-owned model would likely double the annual city support from 2.5 billion won to 5 billion won. A recent survey of 802 citizens showed a divided public, with 37.7% in favor, 31.7% opposed, and 30.7% undecided. Furthermore, 47.3% of respondents characterized the proposed 5 billion won annual expenditure as excessive.

Additional concerns raised by the council include the uncertainty of securing 3 billion won in provincial funding from Gyeongbuk Province and the lack of a sustainable, long-term operational plan. The council noted that current plans focus primarily on the first year's budget and do not adequately address future rising costs, such as player salaries. Mayor Bae Nak-ho is expected to hold a press conference on September 29 to announce the city's final decision regarding the club's future.
