Gimpo and Bucheon cities announce administrative reorganizations

Gimpo and Bucheon cities in South Korea are implementing major organizational restructurings to support their respective administrative goals for the current local government term.

Gimpo City plans to establish one new department and six new teams, increasing its civil servant headcount from 1,755 to 1,782. The reorganization focuses on enhancing citizen communication by replacing the Mayor's direct communication office with a new Citizen Communication Planning Office. To streamline administrative processes, a new Permit Division will be created to centralize complex civil complaints. Additionally, the city will split the Urban Housing Bureau into separate Urban and Housing bureaus and establish an Integrated Care Division to manage health, medical, and welfare services.

Bucheon City is restructuring to bolster AI-based future industries and urban innovation. A key change includes transforming the Economic and Environment Bureau into an AI Economy Bureau, which will oversee digital transformation and AI industrial ecosystems. The city also plans to establish a Railway Policy Division to manage regional transportation projects like the GTX. Bucheon aims to implement these changes by January 1, 2027, following a legislative notice period and city council approval.
