Gina Campuzano proposes law against silent vehicle theft devices

Mexican Senator Gina Campuzano González has introduced a legislative initiative to combat “silent theft,” a method where criminals use electronic devices to intercept wireless signals from keyless entry systems. These devices allow thieves to open and start vehicles in seconds without visible damage or violence.

The proposal seeks to reform the Federal Penal Code to criminalize the manufacturing, modification, commercialization, distribution, importation, and possession of electronic devices designed to bypass vehicle security systems. Additionally, the initiative aims to establish the use of such devices during a robbery as an aggravating factor.

Under the proposed law, individuals found guilty of these actions could face three to eight years in prison and fines ranging from 500 to 1,500 days. Campuzano noted that these tools are increasingly available through digital markets and personal sales, contributing to the more than 100,000 vehicle thefts reported annually in Mexico.
