Gina Hinojosa calls for special session on Texas data centers
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa held campaign stops in El Paso, calling for an emergency legislative session to address the rapid development of data centers across Texas. Hinojosa expressed concerns regarding the impact of these facilities on water supplies, electricity consumption, noise, and public subsidies.
During a visit to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) alongside Beto O’Rourke, Hinojosa also addressed state education and economic issues. She criticized the current administration over school funding deficits, noting that numerous districts operate on four-day weeks, and highlighted rising property taxes and bankruptcy rates in the state.
Incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott has previously promoted Texas as a destination for technology companies. He recently announced agreements with Meta and other firms to ensure they fund their own electric infrastructure and conserve water to avoid shifting utility costs to residential customers.
