Gina Hinojosa challenges Governor Abbott to Texas gubernatorial debate
Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa has issued a formal challenge to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, calling for a debate at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin on October 15 at 10 AM.
During a press conference in San Antonio, Hinojosa accused Abbott of avoiding voters to escape discussions regarding affordability, school funding, and data center regulation. She further stated that if the Governor is “not man enough to debate” her, he does not deserve to hold office. While Hinojosa has accepted an invitation from Hearst Newspapers and NBCUniversal for a debate in Fort Worth on the same day, Abbott’s campaign has not responded to the challenge.
The challenge comes amid shifting political momentum for Hinojosa. Recent polling, including a New York Times/Siena survey, shows her holding a narrow lead. Consequently, Real Clear Politics has moved the race into its “tossup” category, and the Cook Political Report has downgraded the race from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican.”
Hinojosa also outlined policy goals, including a plan to redistribute portions of the state’s $26.9 billion Rainy Day Fund to support Texas families facing economic difficulties.
