Gina Hinojosa challenges Greg Abbott in Texas gubernatorial race

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa has emerged as a significant challenger to incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott in Texas. Despite Abbott’s substantial $86 million campaign war chest and a six-to-one advantage in advertising spending, recent public polling shows the race is highly competitive. Some polls indicate Hinojosa leading with 49% support against Abbott’s 48%.

Hinojosa, a five-term state representative from Austin and former school board president, initially entered the race following a lack of leading Democratic volunteers. Her platform focuses on opposition to Abbott’s $1 billion school voucher program and economic issues such as the affordability of housing, healthcare, and groceries.

In a recent attempt to escalate the campaign, Hinojosa traveled to the Governor’s official residence to challenge Abbott to a televised debate. However, the attempt was unsuccessful as the Governor was reportedly traveling elsewhere in the state. This follows a pattern in Abbott’s previous reelection campaigns, where he has debated opponents in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
