Gina Raimondo calls for global AI standards amid U.S. governance shifts
Former U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has called for the adoption of shared international standards to manage the risks associated with artificial intelligence. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Raimondo emphasized that no single entity can manage technological risks alone, advocating for a strategy that combines competition with cooperation. She noted that while the United States should outcompete China in AI technology, it must also work with Beijing to address model vulnerabilities and autonomous-system governance.
Concurrently, the U.S. Commerce Department is planning to move the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) under direct White House oversight. Currently situated within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), CAISI is responsible for the voluntary testing and evaluation of frontier AI models. The proposed shift aims to address management and resource challenges following a period of leadership turnover and administrative changes. This reorganization would move CAISI from the standard Commerce and NIST chain of command to reporting directly to the White House.
