Gina Rinehart files lawsuit against ABC over offensive satirical video

Australia’s wealthiest individual, mining magnate Gina Rinehart, has initiated legal action against the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) after a contestant on the programme “Race Around The World” aired a four‑minute satirical video that depicted graphic sexual violence against her. Her company, Hancock Prospecting, demanded the clip be removed, a public apology issued and a full investigation into its commissioning, alleging breaches of criminal and civil law. The ABC board has not responded substantively, and Hancock sent legal notices to senior ABC executives.

Filmmaker Kate McGuinness, who created the segment, issued an apology, describing the piece as “far‑cical” satire and stating she never intended to promote violence. Communications Minister Anika Wells has referred the matter to the ABC’s independent Ombudsman for review.
