Ginza urban beekeeping project marks 20th anniversary
An urban beekeeping project in Tokyo’s Ginza district has reached its 20th anniversary, marking a significant increase in production. Since its inception in March 2006 with only three hives, the initiative has grown to approximately 50 hives located on rooftops in Ginza and the Otemachi business district. These hives house between 500,000 and 600,000 bees, with the annual honey harvest increasing from an initial 150 kilograms to 2.8 tons.
The honey is harvested between April and July and is sold online or used in local restaurants and department stores. Beyond production, the project focuses on environmental education, offering tours and lectures to promote coexistence between urban environments and nature.
The Ginza model has inspired similar urban beekeeping efforts across Japan, including initiatives in Sapporo, Nagoya, Shimane Prefecture, and Chiba Prefecture. In some regions, such as Kiyose, the honey is even utilized as a return gift for the national hometown tax donation program.
