Gioia Tauro Mayor Simona Scarcella receives death threats

Simona Scarcella, the mayor of Gioia Tauro, has reported a severe new instance of intimidation involving explicit death threats against her family and pet. An anonymous letter, hand-delivered to her mailbox, contained the message: ‘If you write again, we will slaughter your children and the dog.’

This incident follows a previous attempt to intimidate the mayor in December 2025, when Kalashnikov bullets and 9x21 caliber ammunition were discovered at her residence. That earlier event triggered an investigation by the Carabinieri and the Prosecutor's Office of Palmi.

Scarcella has stated she will not be silenced and intends to continue her administrative duties. She has contacted the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria to request protective measures typically available to local administrators facing threats. Carabinieri investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area to identify those responsible for delivering the letter.
