Italy to cap foreign students and ban face veils in schools

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced a new package of educational reforms aimed at managing migration and integration within the school system. The proposed measures, which are expected to be presented to the Council of Ministers, include a legal cap on the number of foreign students allowed in individual classrooms. While a specific maximum percentage has not been finalized, discussions have centered around a 30% threshold.

Additionally, the reform proposes a ban on full-face veils, such as burqas and niqabs, in schools to promote gender equality and social integration. The package also includes a requirement for parents of foreign students who face significant integration challenges to attend Italian language classes.

Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara has indicated that the goal is to prevent classrooms from becoming majority-non-Italian environments where language barriers could lead to educational neglect. Meanwhile, political opposition leaders, including Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein, have criticized the government's approach, accusing Meloni of using schools for ideological purposes and provoking President Sergio Mattarella.
