Giorgia Meloni faces coalition tension and AfD fallout

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing internal political pressure due to a combination of electoral reform disputes and the recent victory of the AfD in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt region.

Within her coalition, a proposed electoral reform has caused significant friction. Meloni sought a system based on preferential voting to increase her influence, but the move was resisted by coalition partners Lega and Forza Italia, who feared losing power to individual candidates. This disagreement led to the failure of the preferential voting component in the Chamber of Deputies in July.

Regarding the AfD's success in Germany, Meloni's reaction has been marked by silence, contrasting with the vocal support from her deputy, Matteo Salvini of the Lega. While Salvini celebrated the result, Meloni has avoided public comment, a move interpreted as an effort to maintain stable relations with European allies, specifically the German Chancellor. Other coalition members have expressed mixed views, with some viewing the German election result as bad news for Germany.
