Giorgia Meloni faces criticism over fascism comments

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has faced criticism following an interview with the New York Times regarding her political origins and the history of fascism in Italy. Meloni described the history of fascism as “a particularly complex story,” suggesting that perspectives might differ if viewed from within the era itself.

Laura Boldrini, a Democratic Party deputy and president of the Chamber of Deputies' Permanent Commission on Human Rights in the World, condemned the remarks as “an absolute shame.” Boldrini argued that Meloni’s refusal to unequivocally condemn fascism raises doubts about her fitness to lead the Italian Republic, which was founded on the principles of the Resistance.
