Giorgia Meloni faces nationwide protest over proposed electoral law changes

A coalition of civil society groups, led by the Demo Foundation and the association "Costituzione e Democrazia," is launching a series of protests across Italy to oppose the government's draft electoral law. The activists, referencing the early‑2000s "girotondi" demonstrations against Berlusconi, warn that the reform could grant Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni "full powers" and undermine the constitution. They plan to mobilise roughly one hundred initiatives, create a national network of organisations, and, if the law is passed, file an appeal with the Constitutional Court.

The campaign cites a lineage of past protests involving jurists, academics and cultural figures, and it seeks to revive a referendal spirit to challenge what they describe as a threat to democracy and legal order.
