Giorgia Meloni requests EU fiscal flexibility to combat inflation

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has formally requested the European Union to grant greater fiscal flexibility to address the economic impact of inflation, which reached 4.2% in Italy. In a letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Meloni argued that current EU budgetary estimates do not reflect the reality of rising prices, which are eroding purchasing power and increasing mandatory public spending on pensions and welfare.

Meloni is seeking to negotiate these adjustments at the upcoming Ecofin meeting. The Italian government is also prioritizing measures to combat the energy crisis and support businesses, including the potential extension of the Single Special Economic Zone (ZES) to Northern Italy.

In response, the European Commission noted that flexibility has already been provided through the national safeguard clause, allowing Member States to deviate from net expenditure paths by 0.6% of GDP between 2026 and 2028. Meanwhile, domestic groups like Conflavoro have proposed specific tax exemptions and energy price caps for SMEs to support growth.
