Giorgia Meloni rebuked by Agostino Sella over Ceuta migration

On 2 August 2026 Agostino Sella, president of the association Don Bosco 2000, sent a letter to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni denouncing the government’s migration policies after a wave of deaths in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Sella accuses Meloni of using the tragedy of migrant drownings – 19 youths, many minors, lost their lives – as a political backdrop, calling the approach “scialallaggio politico sulla pelle dei poveri” and stating “Questo non è governare”.

He links the crisis to broader geopolitics, claiming U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for Morocco has enabled Rabat to weaponise migrant flows against Spain following Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s visit to Algeria. Sella also criticises Italy’s symbolic suspension of Schengen controls with Spain, describing it as ineffective and serving only domestic political interests.
