Giorgia Meloni registers voice as EU trademark to combat deepfakes

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to register her voice as a sound trademark. The application includes a four-second audio clip of her saying, “Io sono Giorgia Meloni.”

This legal move aims to provide enhanced protection against the rising threat of artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes. Meloni has previously been the target of manipulated images and audio, including sexually explicit deepfake content. By establishing her voice as a trademark, she seeks to gain additional legal tools to combat unauthorized imitations, which can be used for political manipulation, financial fraud, or diplomatic deception.

The registration covers several service categories, including downloadable multimedia content, cultural activities, and the organization of political events. While the application is currently under examination, experts note that while a trademark provides a stronger legal basis for seeking damages or content removal, it may not automatically prevent all forms of AI voice cloning. The initiative highlights the growing challenge for public figures to safeguard their digital identities in an era of increasingly convincing synthetic media.
