Giorgia Meloni refuses to sign €1 billion decree for magistrate salary adjustments

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced her refusal to sign a decree that would authorize nearly one billion euros for magistrate salary adjustments and arrears. Meloni cited economic priorities, noting that the amount is ten times greater than funds being sought to support the road transport sector.

The dispute stems from rulings by the Council of State, which declared previous salary calculation methods used by the state to be illegitimate. These adjustments, which the National Association of Magistrates (ANM) describes as legally mandated corrections rather than bonuses, could cost the state between 970 million and 1 billion euros. The ANM has indicated it is considering a legal appeal to ensure the rights of approximately 11,000 magistrates are upheld.

The situation has also sparked personal tension, with Rome prosecutor Alessandro Di Cicco posting an insult toward the Prime Minister on social media following her announcement. While Meloni expressed openness to dialogue with representative associations, the government remains focused on managing broader economic challenges and resource allocation.
