Giorgia Meloni seeks EU trademark for voice recording
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has filed an application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to register a four-second audio recording of her voice as an EU sound trademark. The recording, which features her saying “Io sono Giorgia Meloni,” is currently under examination by the office.
The initiative aims to provide a legal tool to combat the rise of generative artificial intelligence, specifically voice cloning and deepfakes, ahead of the 2027 legislative elections. If approved, the trademark would cover various categories, including downloadable multimedia content, cultural activities, and the organization of political meetings.
While the registration would allow Meloni to legally contest unauthorized uses of the audio, legal experts note that the trademark itself would not physically prevent the creation of AI-generated copies. The application, filed through a Roman law firm, is currently listed in the EUIPO public register as “under examination.”
