Giorgia Meloni ties government survival to electoral law vote

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has tied the survival of her government to the passage of a new electoral law. Meloni has decided to use a vote of confidence to secure the measure, stating that if the Chamber of Deputies rejects it, she will be prepared to resign.

The decisive votes are expected to take place on October 8 and 9. The proposed law, which has already passed the Senate, includes controversial provisions regarding voting preferences. Following a summer disagreement within the center-right coalition, an agreement was reached on 'tempered' preferences, where party leaders select blocked candidates.

In response to the Senate's approval, a conference titled ‘On the side of the Constitution – against an electoral law that changes constitutional balances’ is scheduled for September 28 in Milan. The event will bring together journalists, politicians, and legal experts to analyze how the proposed reforms might impact the relationship between citizens, political parties, and state institutions.
