Giorgia Meloni warns EU leaders of public unrest over energy prices

During an EU summit, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni issued a stark warning to fellow heads of state regarding rising energy prices. Speaking in Italian during a late-night negotiation session, Meloni cautioned that if energy costs remain at current levels, citizens across Europe will eventually confront leaders with pitchforks.

The tension arose during debates over the Emissions Trading System (ETS), the European mechanism for CO2 emission certificates. Meloni, along with representatives from Greece, Cyprus, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, submitted an amendment concerning competitiveness conclusions. The group is urging the European Commission to honor commitments made earlier in the year regarding the impact of the carbon market on industry.
