Giorgia Meloni warns Putin seeks European escalation to mask Ukraine battlefield failures
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is attempting to escalate tensions with Europe to distract from the difficulties Russia is facing on the battlefield in Ukraine. Speaking in Oslo alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Meloni urged European allies to remain calm and analyze Moscow’s motives before reacting to recent provocations.
Meloni argued that responding to provocations in a way that widens the confrontation would serve Moscow's interests rather than Europe's. She emphasized the need for strategic cohesion and suggested that Europe should avoid being dictated to by Russian actions. To strengthen the continent's diplomatic position, Meloni renewed her proposal for Europe to appoint a single representative for Ukraine, a format that would include non-EU allies such as Norway and the United Kingdom.
These warnings come amid increased concerns regarding hybrid activities on NATO's eastern flank, including airspace violations and drone incidents. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also noted intelligence assessments suggesting Russia may use such hybrid incidents, framed as accidents, to undermine NATO cohesion and trust in Article 5.
