Meloni criticizes Trump-Putin diesel agreement

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has criticized a recent agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the delivery of Russian diesel to the United States and global markets. Speaking to the Italian Senate ahead of the upcoming European Council, Meloni described the deal as a 'very risky choice' that could legitimize Moscow, provide new revenue to fund the war in Ukraine, and weaken the effectiveness of Western sanctions.

Meloni argued that fuel price volatility is primarily driven by conflict in Iran rather than the war in Ukraine, suggesting that reopening Russian supplies would not resolve consumer price issues. She also proposed that the European Union appoint an authoritative figure to negotiate on behalf of Europe regarding the conflict.

The White House has defended the agreement, with spokesperson Taylor Rogers calling it a 'great success' intended to lower energy costs for American farmers, truckers, and families. Russian officials indicated that contracts for diesel exports to the US could be finalized within days, with potential monthly volumes reaching up to 3.5 million tons by the end of 2026.
