Giorgia Meloni’s G7 Appearance Sparks Political Debate in Italy

Journalist Tommaso Cerno argued that criticism of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s posture during a photo at the G7 summit missed the substantive political issues facing Italy, such as its role in European immigration policy, relations with allies and the Ukraine conflict. He said the focus on a physical gesture diverted attention from the weight of Italy’s diplomatic contributions and labelled the debate a “triumph of posturology over politology.”

At a separate “Parliamentary Day” event, opposition leaders Elly Schlein, Giuseppe Conte, Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni met with Meloni and discussed the renewed friendly tone between Italy and the United States, highlighting recent remarks by Meloni that Italy and the U.S. remain “always friends.” The gathering also referenced G7 discussions on Ukraine, Russia’s limited advances, and bilateral talks with Canada and the United Arab Emirates on critical minerals and Gulf security.
