Giorgos Avtias reveals severe health crisis following election
Giorgos Avtias, a Greek journalist and Member of the European Parliament for New Democracy, has revealed a severe health crisis he faced following the European elections.
Avtias disclosed that after a routine examination, doctors discovered he was suffering from pneumonia, pericarditis, and five liters of fluid in his lungs. The condition was attributed to a microbe potentially contracted from air conditioning in Lisbon. Medical professionals strictly prohibited him from flying to his inauguration, warning that doing so would be life-threatening.
He underwent 24 days of hospitalization, during which doctors performed procedures involving tubes to drain fluid from his lungs. Avtias noted that he initially experienced no symptoms, such as fever or cough, prior to the diagnosis. He also shared his personal spiritual response to the ordeal, including a solo trip to Tinos to express his gratitude.
