Greece expands diplomatic footprint at UN General Assembly

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis has engaged in extensive diplomatic activity during the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, emphasizing a new geopolitical era marked by the decline of international law and traditional institutions. Gerapetritis highlighted Greece's role in regional stability through trilateral meetings with Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt, as well as engagements with leaders from the Global South.

A major focus of the Greek delegation was maritime security and the freedom of navigation, particularly in response to threats in the Red Sea. Greece is participating in the founding session of the Group of Friends for the Safety and Protection of Shipping and Seafarers. Additionally, Gerapetritis and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar co-hosted a high-level event regarding the impact of Artificial Intelligence on international peace and security, specifically its applications in maritime safety.

Gerapetritis called for a robust international regulatory framework for AI, including rules for licensing and oversight, arguing that technology cannot replace human responsibility. Looking ahead, Greece is set to assume the presidency of the UN Security Council in October, a period that will involve addressing major international crises and the selection of a new UN Secretary-General.

Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandra Papadopoulou also participated in diplomatic dialogues, including an informal session between UN Security Council members and the Arab League, focusing on Middle East developments and food security.
