Giorgos Makropoulos, prominent chess leader and champion, dies at 73
Giorgos Makropoulos, a prominent figure in Greek and international chess, has passed away at the age of 73. A highly accomplished player, Makropoulos was an International Master since 1979 and won the Greek National Championship seven times (1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1985). He also represented Greece in three Chess Olympiads.
Beyond his competitive career, Makropoulos held significant leadership roles. He served as the President of the Hellenic Chess Federation (ESO) for several decades and held the positions of Honorary President and Vice President within the organization. His influence extended globally through his service to the International Chess Federation (FIDE), where he served as Deputy President and Vice President.
The Hellenic Chess Federation and FIDE have both expressed deep sadness over his loss, recognizing his decades of service and his role as a central figure in the organization and development of the sport.
