Giorgos Vardinojanis, shipping magnate and Panathinaikos president, dies at 90

Giorgos Vardinojanis, a prominent Greek shipping magnate and former president of Panathinaikos FC, has passed away at the age of 90. Known by the nickname ‘Kapetanios’ (Captain), he was a central figure in both the Greek maritime industry and national sports.

Born in 1936 in Rethymno, Crete, Vardinojanis studied maritime studies in Southampton, England. He rose to prominence in the shipping sector and served two terms on the board of the Hellenic Shipping Companies Association. His nickname originated from a daring maritime feat where he successfully broke an embargo in Rhodesia.

In the sporting world, Vardinojanis led Panathinaikos FC for 21 years, from 1979 to 2000. Under his leadership, the club achieved significant domestic success, including six championships and nine cups, and reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1985 and the Champions League in 1996. His death has drawn condolences from the Greek political community, the shipping industry, and various football organizations, including the Hellenic Football Federation and the Super League Greece.

The Vardinojanis family, which has deep roots in Crete, announced that his funeral will be held in a strictly private ceremony within the family circle. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the ‘ELPIDA’ Association for supporting children with cancer.
