Giorgos Vlachos criticizes Greek government over borrower support
During a session in the Greek Parliament, MP Giorgos Vlachos criticized the government for failing to support consistent mortgage borrowers. Vlachos argued that while the administration assists vulnerable citizens, it neglects those who manage to meet their loan obligations through sacrifice. He proposed measures such as income tax relief or bonuses for these borrowers, stating that they are the ones who maintain the stability of the financial system.
Deputy Finance Minister Dimitris Markopoulos responded by highlighting existing initiatives, including IMF measures regarding presumptive taxation, legislative interventions for loans under the Katseli law, and banking reward programs implemented during interest rate hikes. Markopoulos emphasized that the government is not leaving vulnerable groups behind.
The exchange became heated, with Vlachos accusing the government of being “out of touch with reality” and failing to address his specific questions. He also raised concerns regarding the behavior of investment funds, suggesting they act in an “uncontrolled” manner. Markopoulos defended the government's targeted policies and rejected the idea of “magic recipes” offered by critics.
