Giovani Democratici protest housing emergency in Rome
Members of the Giovani Democratici have launched a national campaign titled ‘Generazione senza casa’ (Homeless Generation) to protest Italy’s housing emergency. The mobilization includes a demonstration in Rome’s Piazza Bologna, where protesters have set up tents to symbolize the precarious living conditions faced by students and young workers.
Virginia Libero, national secretary of the Giovani Democratici, stated that many young people are forced to spend half their salaries on single rooms or are delaying independence due to the lack of affordable housing. The group is calling for increased funding for public housing, restrictions on short-term rentals, and the restoration of rental funds that were previously cut by the Meloni government.
In response to the current situation, the Partito Democratico has presented a national housing plan. This proposal aims to strengthen public residential construction, facilitate access to sustainable rents, repurpose existing real estate, and promote housing solutions specifically for students and young adults.
