CONI investigates FIGC election regarding Giovanni Malagò membership

The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) is investigating potential violations regarding the election of Giovanni Malagò as president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The controversy stems from Malagò not holding a valid membership (tesseramento) at the time of his candidacy.

Ugo Taucer, CONI's General Prosecutor for Sport, has archived the disciplinary proceedings against Malagò personally, noting that because he was not a member, he cannot be subject to sanctions. However, Taucer has transferred the case to CONI to investigate whether the FIGC violated fundamental principles of the sports regulatory system by allowing the candidacy to proceed.

CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio stated that the organization will rely on recognized sports law experts to conduct a thorough legal review. The investigation aims to determine if the FIGC failed to apply its own rules regarding eligibility requirements. While Malagò has expressed confidence in his position and denied fear of losing his presidency, the FIGC faces the possibility of being placed under extraordinary administration (commissariamento) if serious violations are confirmed.
