Giovanni Malagò cleared to run for FIGC presidency after ANAC approval

Italy’s anti‑corruption authority (ANAC) issued a positive opinion confirming that former CONI president Giovanni Malagò is not ineligible under the “pantouflage” incompatibility rules, allowing him to stand in the upcoming election for the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The assessment, requested by Sport Minister Andrea Abodi, concluded that the FIGC presidency does not fall within the categories of post‑employment relationships that would trigger the restriction.

With the legal hurdle removed, Malagò, backed by the Serie A, Serie B leagues and the associations of players and coaches, will face Giancarlo Abete in the vote scheduled for 22 June. The election will be decided by 273 delegates representing clubs, leagues and technical staff. Malagò described the contest as “atypically fair and gentlemanly” and pledged to unite Italian football under a single direction.

The ANAC ruling removes the main obstacle that had raised doubts about a possible conflict of interest stemming from Malagò’s previous role at CONI, clearing the way for a decisive leadership choice for Italian soccer.
