Giovanni Malagò discusses FIGC leadership and national team progress
Giovanni Malagò, the commissioner of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), has addressed the current state of Italian football and his future leadership. Malagò described the recent period as intense and difficult, noting that the current commissioner status is a “damage” to the federation due to atypical circumstances that led to the need for new elections.
Regarding the national teams, Malagò highlighted recent progress, noting that the senior men’s team has regained confidence and the Under-21 squad has qualified for the European Championships. He expressed ambitions for the Under-21s to reach the podium and for the team to qualify for the Olympics. He also noted the positive momentum of the women’s national team as they work toward World Cup participation.
Malagò also commented on administrative matters, including the appointment of Diana Bianchedi. He admitted to a mistake in “timing” regarding her nomination but remains convinced of her ability to act as a cultural bridge between football and other sports. Additionally, he touched upon challenges facing young referees, including budget constraints and physical aggression. Looking ahead, Malagò expressed his expectation to be re-nominated for the FIGC presidency, pending decisions from Serie A.
