Giovanni Malagò cleared to run for FIGC presidency as election approaches

Italy’s anti‑corruption authority ANAC has ruled that former CONI chief Giovanni Malagò meets the eligibility criteria to stand in the upcoming FIGC presidential election, removing doubts over a possible “pantouflage” conflict. The decision, issued at the request of sport minister Andrea Abodi, means Malagò can contest the vote scheduled for Monday at the Rome Cavalieri.

The race pits Malagò against Giancarlo Abete. According to internal estimates, Malagò enjoys support from Serie A, Serie B, club owners and coaches, roughly 54 % of the electorate, while Abete is backed mainly by the amateur leagues (LND) with about 34 %. The election uses an electronic secret ballot with voting weights for delegates from leagues, clubs, players and coaches.

In a separate statement, candidate Abete wrote to Bari’s mayor Vito Leccese, confirming his commitment to the federation’s rule that ends “multiproprietà” of professional clubs by the 2028‑2029 season, and promised to monitor the SSC Bari case closely.
