Giovanni Malagò elected FIGC president to reshape Italian football

Giovanni Malagò was elected president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) with roughly 68‑70% of the vote, succeeding Gabriele Gravina who resigned after Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Malagò said his first tasks will be to set the federation’s budget, appoint a technical director and choose vice‑presidents, while also defining a plan to rebuild the national team’s structure.

He indicated that the federation will consider former coaches Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte as candidates for the senior team’s head coach, but emphasized that appointing a new coach alone will not solve deeper problems. Legends such as Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Del Piero, Roberto Baggio and Gianluigi Buffon have been mentioned as advisers, and Polish former player Zbigniew “Zibì” Boniek – who previously led the Polish FA and served as a UEFA vice‑president – is being discussed for a possible advisory role in the overhaul.

Malagò’s agenda includes establishing a technical director before naming a selector and addressing the federation’s immediate financial and organisational challenges to revive Italy’s football fortunes.
