Giovanni Malagò Elected President of Italy's Football Federation

The Federation Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) elected Giovanni Malagò as its new president on 22 June 2026, with 68.58 % of the votes from 245 delegates at the assembly in Rome. His rival, Giancarlo Abete, received 29.17 % while blank votes accounted for 2.25 %.

Malagò, a former CONI president and head of the Milano‑Cortina 2026 Olympic organising committee, inherits a federation grappling with a third consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup and the recent resignation of former president Gabriele Gravina. He pledged to rebuild the organization, stating, “Alone I can do nothing, but together we can do everything.” The election was supported by Serie A, Serie B, the players' and coaches' unions, and significant backing from the amateur league in Lombardy.
