Giovanni Malagò elected FIGC president with 68.58% of votes

On 22 June 2026 the FIGC held its electoral assembly at the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Giovanni Malagò, former CONI president (2013‑2025) and head of the Milano‑Cortina 2026 Olympic organising committee, was elected president with 68.58 % of the weighted vote (343 084 votes). His rival, Giancarlo Abete, received 29.17 % (145 936 votes) and blank votes were 2.25 % (11 272).

Malagò took over after the resignation of Gabriele Gravina following Italy’s third consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup. In his opening remarks he said, “Da solo non potrò fare niente, ma con voi posso fare tutto.” He outlined three immediate priorities: “compattare la squadra, ripristinare il rapporto con una parte della politica, e dare risposte ai problemi strutturali del calcio.”

His programme stresses youth development (incentives for cadet and Serie B teams), financial sustainability of clubs, reforms of league licensing, and a new dialogue with the government on tax credits, betting‑revenue sharing and infrastructure investment. He also announced the creation of a technical‑director role to assist the future national‑team coach.

Regional officials, such as Calabria’s sports assessor, welcomed the election, highlighting Malagò’s past support for young athletes. The new president will serve the remainder of Gravina’s term, until summer 2028.
