Giovanni Pernice addresses depression and professional betrayal in new book

Dancer Giovanni Pernice has addressed his departure from the BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in his new book, ‘Gio: Taking the Lead’. The 35-year-old Italian dancer revealed that he experienced deep depression and suicidal thoughts following his dismissal from the show in 2024.

Pernice’s exit followed allegations of bullying made by actress Amanda Abbington, which the BBC upheld after an investigation. In his book, Pernice claims he felt betrayed and abandoned by his fellow professional dancers during this period, stating that the perceived ‘family’ atmosphere of the show did not exist for him during his darkest days.

He also leveled accusations against other staff and performers, alleging that some choreographers engage in bullying behavior and that certain dancers consume alcohol before live shows. These claims have reportedly left his former colleagues feeling “shocked” and “hurt,” with some accusing him of tarnishing their reputations through vague allegations.
