Giovannino Guareschi: New biography explores the life of the Italian writer

A new biography by Marco Ferrazzoli, titled ‘Ho imparato a dire no (ma c’è voluta una guerra). Vita, opere e libertà di Giovannino Guareschi’, explores the life and legacy of the influential Italian writer and satirist. The book aims to present Guareschi as a significant 20th-century intellectual, highlighting his moral consistency and his refusal to conform to political trends.

Guareschi, known globally for creating the characters Don Camillo and Peppone, was a complex figure: a staunch anti-communist and monarchist who was nonetheless critical of the Christian Democracy party. His life was marked by significant hardship, including imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps. The publication coincides with the release of the Rai biopic ‘Non muoio neanche se mi ammazzano’.

Historical accounts of Guareschi’s passing in July 1968 note the polarized reception he received from the media of the time. While some outlets were hostile toward his views, he remained a deeply beloved figure among the people of the Bassa region, where he lived and worked.
