Gippsland, Victoria experiences earthquake aftershocks
A 3.2 magnitude aftershock rattled residents in Gippsland, Victoria, on Wednesday night. According to Geoscience Australia, more than 2,000 people reported feeling the tremor, which had an epicentre near Leongatha.
The aftershock follows a larger 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck near Korumburra on October 3. That initial quake was the largest recorded in Victoria in the past four years and was felt across the state, from Ballarat to Bairnsdale.
Adam Pascale, chief scientist at the Seismology Research Centre, warned that there is an increased likelihood of equivalent or larger seismic events in the short term following such activity. He noted that in 2009, the Korumburra region experienced a similar pattern of significant tremors occurring within two weeks of each other.
