Gipuzkoa nursing home workers extend strike over labor conditions

Workers at eight nursing homes in Gipuzkoa have extended their strike for an additional month, now set to continue until at least September 30. The labor action, which involves more than 600 workers, is driven by concerns over job precariousness, a lack of political will from the Provincial Council (Diputación) to resolve the conflict, and a blocked collective bargaining process.

The ELA union reports that the strike has reached nearly 300 days. Key grievances include involuntary part-time contracts and a wage gap exceeding 10,000 euros annually. The affected facilities are located in Errenteria, Zumaia, Zumarraga, Ordizia, and San Sebastián.

In a related development, the launch of the new Social Services Quality Evaluation Agency of Gipuzkoa was met with protests from families, pensioners, and striking workers. Critics, including the group Gipuzkoako Senideak, argue the agency lacks representation from service users and their associations. Protesters maintain that improving care quality is impossible without addressing the underlying labor conditions and precariousness in the sector.
