Giraffes exhibit extreme sleep patterns to maintain constant vigilance
Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) exhibit one of the most extreme sleep patterns recorded in mammals, surviving on as little as 30 minutes to 2 hours of sleep per day. This rest is not continuous but consists of fragmented polyphasic micro-naps, often lasting only 5 to 10 minutes, spread across a 24-hour period.
This biological paradox is driven by evolutionary necessity. Due to their height and the biomechanical difficulty of lifting their heavy necks, giraffes primarily sleep standing up to maintain a 180-degree field of vision for predators. Deep sleep on the ground is rare and typically occurs in short bursts of no more than 10 minutes, often only when the herd provides rotational vigilance.
Researchers from the University of Zurich and the University of California, Davis, are investigating how the giraffe's brain manages this chronic sleep deficit. While humans suffer cognitive collapse from sleep deprivation, giraffes appear to utilize a state of vigilant sleep where the brain remains partially active. Scientists are specifically looking into whether they possess compensatory mechanisms, such as specialized glymphatic flow, to maintain neurological health despite minimal REM sleep.
