Istanbul Airport has officially inaugurated its fourth main runway, marking a significant expansion of its operational capacity. The new runway, which cost 890 million euros, is 2,820 meters long and 45 meters wide. Notably, it is the airport's first runway oriented in an east-west direction, whereas existing runways follow a north-south alignment.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the opening ceremony, stating that the investment will improve service standards by reducing taxiing and waiting times, as well as saving fuel and time. The expansion is expected to increase operational flexibility during adverse weather conditions and improve on-time departure rates. With this addition, the total number of runways at the airport rises to six.

Erdoğan highlighted the airport's economic impact, noting that it employs 202,000 people and contributes approximately 2.2 percent to Turkey's national income, equivalent to 24.2 billion dollars. Looking toward 2030, the government aims to increase employment related to airport activities to 472,000 and reach a revenue of 44 billion dollars. Long-term strategic plans for the facility include expanding to a total of nine runways and reaching an annual capacity of 200 million passengers.
