Girl with Down syndrome and grandfather slain in Huehuetenango, Guatemala
A 16‑year‑old girl with Down syndrome and severe limb disabilities was found dead alongside her 75‑year‑old grandfather, Juan Méndez Velásquez, in the canton Espino Blanco, aldea Acal, San Ildefonso Ixtahuacán, Huehuetenango. Neighbours reported the girl was discovered without clothing, leading to speculation of sexual assault, though authorities have not confirmed this. The bodies were taken to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) for autopsy before being released to the family for burial.
The case is being investigated by the Specialized Criminal Investigation Division (DEIC) of the National Civil Police and the Public Ministry. No suspects or motive have been disclosed, and the community is demanding a thorough investigation and accountability for the double homicide.
