Giro d'Italia Women sees Demi Vollering win, Belgian team penalized
Demi Vollering claimed victory in the Giro d'Italia Women, defeating Anna van der Breggen after a tactical finish on the Colle delle Finestre. Dutch sprinter Lorena Wiebes was disqualified when her bike was judged too light, receiving a 20‑second time penalty and a fine.
Belgian outfit AG Insurance‑Soudal celebrated top‑ten results with Urska Zigart finishing eighth and Lore De Schepper tenth, but the team received a week‑long suspension after team directors were handed yellow cards for "stayeren" and failure to follow race officials. Zigart also incurred a 100 CHF fine, point deductions and a 20‑second time penalty.
The race highlighted the growing competitiveness of women's cycling and the strict enforcement of UCI regulations.
